Trouble on the Roadway

This beautiful adult barred owl (24-114)found itself at our clinic after being hit by a car. Owls often fall victim to vehicle collisions as they hunt small prey along roadways.

Discarding litter, including food waste out windows while driving, attracts small rodents, which in turn attracts owls and other predators who hunt them. This can greatly increase the time they spend near roadways, and as such, increases their risk of being struck by a vehicle.

How can you help?

  • To help keep animals safe from road collisions be sure to not discard food scraps and other litter while driving.

  • Educate others on the importance properly discarding waste material and not littering.

  • Follow speed limits and keep your eyes on the road.

  • Be mindful when traveling through heavily populated wildlife areas such as roadways along fragmented forests and parks.

  • If you see something slow down and if safe to do so, survey the area.
